Heat rises, and in older houses up to a third goes straight up through the chimney
or up through the roof and into the sky. Once you have lagged the roof and before
you start to think about expensive double-glazing, insulate your walls. After two or
three years a third of all the money that you would have spent on heating will stay in
your pocket.
If there’s nothing between the inner and outer walls, heat will simply radiate through;
and to stop that you need Cavity wall insulation. There are several types of it; white
and yellow wool which is spun from glass and green wool that is actually made from rock
or there is expanded polystyrene. Your installer will help you choose which is the best
for your house.
If you don’t then for every £100 you spend on heating bills more than a third of it
will not keep you warm. It will disappear through the walls or roof because there is
nothing to stop it. Filled with insulation the gap and loft will act as a weather shield
and make your home much warmer.
In two or three years after your house has been fully insulated, it will pay for itself.
